St. Thomas the Apostle Religious Education Program

Options for Prep Program Grades 1 – 7


Traditional Program:

·       Weekly classes held during the week /afternoon & evening session

o   Tuesday Afternoon               4:30pm – 5:45pm

o   Tuesday Evening                  6:15pm -7:30pm

o   Wednesday Afternoon          4:30pm-5:45pm

·       Grades 1 - 6

·       One hour and half

·       Taught by volunteer Catechist


Home- School / Family Catechesis:

·       Not offered for Sacramental Years ( Grade 2 & 7)

·       Meet Monthly with parent and child

·       One hour session

·       Parents work with DRE/Speaker on topics children will be learning for the upcoming month

·       Students go to room with Catechist to review previous month and complete first lesson for the month.

·       Meet second Sunday of the Month @4pm to 5pm

·       Must also attend Confession during Advent and Lent, Weekly Mass, Ash Wednesday, Stations of the Cross, May Procession etc.

Confirmation Preparation

Camp Caritas is a religious enrichment summer camp for students who are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. One is being held at Shanahan High school and Bonner / Prendie High School.  It will run for one week (June 17-21) and will cover the Confirmation framework. Shanahan teachers and peer minister will staff the program. 


St. Thomas:  Classes will be held the second Sunday of each month for two hours.  These classes will be held on Sunday Evening 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the Social Hall.  The class will consist of fellowship, lesson, discussions, & Spirit & Corporal Mercy Actions. 

Other Program Elements:  To establish their discipleship identity and develop habits and skills for living and sharing their faith in their daily lives.  All Candidates will do the following whether they attend the Caritas Camp or the St. Thomas Program.

·       Attend Confession during Lent & Advent

·       Complete Saint Project, based on chosen Confirmation name, for the fall of 8th Grade & display your project after Mass in the Social Hall. 

·       Attend or be a part of an Advent Service

·       Attend or be a part of Stations of the Cross

·       Complete 8 separate Works of Mercy (at least 2 out of the 8 must be  from the Spiritual Works) Complete Works of Mercy Chart 

·       You must give an hour of your time to that work, but it can be spread out   (Do the task for 15 minutes/4 days a week = one hour.)

1.      You must provide verification that you spent at least one hour on each work.  Parents or supervisors may sign.  Pictures can also be added.

2.     This can be accomplished on your own or with the PREP group

·       Attend Bishop Shanahan’s Middle-School Retreat (3 dates offered over their formation prior to Confirmation) Select one and attend.

·       Write a letter to the Bishop:  Due June 2020
